In brief :

341 tribes are spread across the archipelago, living in 33 municipalities. On this Melanesian civilization in a thousand shades, was transplanted trough the galleys and colonization, a culture of Anglo-Saxon and French origins. Today, they are farmers, ranchers, and miners. Free immigration has filled the recurring lack of work force: workers came from Wallis and Futuna, Tahiti, Indonesia, the former French colonies in Africa, Vietnam, not to mention the French in the Metropolis, who came to work in public service, and sometimes choose to remain permanently here in Oceania.
City dwellers, broussards or living in a tribe, they all sense now that they are sharing a common destiny.
