In brief :
Ouvéa is one of the most beautiful atolls in the Pacific, with its white sandy beach that stretches for 25 km, caressed by the breathtaking turquoise clear water. The island, 35 km long and in places less than 40 meters wide, is crossed from north to south by a single road. The people of Ouvéa trace their origins in the Polynesian and Melanesian migration. The very name of the island is the Polynesian name of Wallis Island (Ouvéa).
Ouvéa inherited the nickname « île la plus proche du Paradis » (i.e. "the island closest to paradise") in the 70s, from Katsura Morimura, a young Japanese writer who came to visit Ouvéa. Enchanted by the place, she titled the novel she was writing "The island closest to paradise", and had placed the action on the island.
