The Knit Striped Snake
Zoom on…
In brief :
There are a dozen species of sea snakes living in the New Caledonian waters. The knit striped snake is the most common species: they are the only amphibious ones living on these islands, nestled under the rocks in the centre of purslane branches where they come to digest, reproduce, or spawn.
Their venom is more powerful than the cobra’s, but they have nevertheless a good reputation because of their timid nature; the knit striped snakes are not aggressive and they never attack man in normal circumstances, so much so that we often see children playing with them on the beaches.
